The barn is located on 100 acres of rolling pasture and woods, rock-lined creeks and waterfalls, and joins Lake Malone State Park. There is a pond just beyond the back deck that is very well stocked with bass, catfish, crappie and bluegill. Ducks, geese, kingfishers and herons visit the pond as do deer, turkey and even coyotes.
The total floor space of the barn is 8900 square feet. I have converted parts of the first, second and third floors into my living area. There is a Great Room of 1750 square feet which has a basketball court. The ceiling is 25 feet high and features exposed rafters. The Master Bedroom is 740 square feet with 15 foot ceilings, also with exposed rafters. There is a second floor deck that is 12 feet x 36 feet (432 square feet) that is 16 feet above the ground. The third floor Master Bedroom has a 6 ft x 12 ft balcony, 26 feet above ground level, that offers spectular views of the distant forested ridges. Virtually the entire east walls of the second and third floors are glass, affording great views of the sunrises and moonrises.
The barn was built about sixty years ago from timber cut on this farm. The workmanship of the construction is very impressive. In fact, I bought the farm without any intention of using the barn as a residence. But the beauty of the structure caused me to start on a very small remodeling project. But the more I did the more I wanted to do and, well, it got way out of hand. Still, my tastes are very simple and there is much more that could be done to create your own personal vision.
For the horse lover, there are six horse stalls. And there are many acres of pasture and woods which could be used for riding trails. The land has been protected from timber harvest and the woods are full of large trees of many species including hickory, maple, oak, beech, walnut, dogwood, redbud, persimmon, cedar, pine, poplar, ash and some that I have not yet identified. The nuts and berries from the forest support a remarkable population of wildlife. The forest joins Lake Malone State Park and there is no fence separating the two.
This is truly a unique place.
